They were originally designed as materials with high corrosion resistance for industrial applications such as the production of acids and alkalis.

The name “Hastelloy” comes from the surnames of two scientists: Robert Hastey and William Lloyd, who worked on the development of these alloys. The first alloys in the Hastelloy series were produced in the 1940s and were used in the chemical, refinery, and power industries.

Hastelloy C22 – the most common Hastelloy-type alloy, contains high amounts of the following alloying elements: chromium (20-22.5%), molybdenum (12.5-14.5%), tungsten (2.5-3.5%). It exhibits high resistance to general, intergranular, crevice and stress corrosion. It is characterized by resistance to corrosive action in stagnant water environments.

It is used in the chemical, power, pulp and paper, marine, and waste treatment industries. Common trade names of the alloy: Hastelloy C22,Inconel 22, Nicrofer 5621.

Hastelloy C276 – the alloy is composed mainly of nickel (balance), molybdenum (15-17%) and chromium (14.5-16.5%). It shows excellent resistance to chemical processes in varied environments, e.g. those with high chloride concentration, as well as resistance to corrosion under harsh conditions (e.g. seawater).

The alloy is used in the pulp and paper, chemical, food, pharmaceutical industries, and in waste management plants. Common trade names: Nickelvac HC-276, Inconel 276, Nicrofer 5716, Hastelloy C276.

INCONEL

The name “Inconel” comes from two words – “inconel” and “alloy”. “Inconel” is a combination of the words “inconvenient” and “nickel”, and “alloy” means alloy. This name was given by the International Nickel Company (INCO) during work on developing a new alloy in the 1940s.

Inconel 600 – an alloy with a high nickel content (min. 72%), chromium (14-17%) and iron (6-10%), it belongs to structural materials and exhibits high resistance to corrosion and heat. It is characterized by good mechanical properties – high strength and formability. It can be used at high temperatures.

It is widely used in the chemical, aerospace, power and heating industries. It is also a primary material in the manufacture of nuclear reactors. Common trade names: inconel 600, Nickelvac 600, Ferrochronin 600.

Inconel 625 – an alloy primarily composed of nickel and chromium. Additional alloying elements are molybdenum and niobium, which provide refractory properties to the alloy. It is a very hard, non-magnetic material with high durability and corrosion resistance. It is characterized by high resistance to fatigue and stress corrosion caused by chloride ions.

It is used in heating equipment, gas turbine engines, pipelines, and in the chemical industry. Trade names: inconel 625, Chornin 625, Altemp 625, Nickelvac 625, Hayenes 625, Nicrofer 6020.

INCOLOY

The history of Incoloy steel dates back to the 1930s, when Special Metals Corporation began research on nickel alloys with increased corrosion resistance. The first version of Incoloy was created in 1938, and serial production began in the 1950s.

Incoloy 800 – the alloy contains chromium, nickel, iron as well as additions of titanium, carbon and aluminum. A widely used alloy in structural applications where high strength and resistance to high temperature environments are required. It is used in the heating industry for manufacturing parts of industrial furnaces, and in the chemical and petrochemical industries for heat exchangers and pipelines. Trade names: incoloy 800, ferrochronin 800, Nickelvac 800, nicrofer 3220.

Incoloy 825 – an alloy of nickel, iron and chromium with additions of copper, molybdenum and titanium. Its chemical composition provides resistance to aggressive agents in various corrosive environments. It shows resistance to stress corrosion, intergranular and crevice corrosion.

The material is used in the chemical industry, in waste treatment plants, in the oil and gas extraction industry, and in radioactive waste management facilities. Trade names: Incoloy 825, Nickelvac 825, Nicrofer 4241.

MONEL

Monel alloy is a nickel-copper alloy that was invented by David H. Brown in the mid-1900s. The name Monel comes from Brown’s nickname, “Monk”, and from the word “metal”, intended to emphasize the metallic character of this material.

Monel 400 – an alloy of nickel (67%) and copper (about 23%), highly resistant to the corrosive action of seawater and to cracking in freshwater environments. It retains very good mechanical properties at low temperatures and is also suitable for high temperatures up to 537 ⁰C. It is widely used in structures and components related to the marine industry.

Monel K500 – the base of the alloy is nickel (minimum 63%) and copper (27-33%). It exhibits enhanced mechanical properties compared to Monel 400 due to additions of titanium and aluminum. It is characterized by increased hardness and strength.

HASTELLOY Hastelloy steel is the trade name for a series of nickel alloys that were developed by Haynes International Inc. in the 1930s.
