Basics of acid-resistant and austenitic stainless steels

Definition and characteristics of austenitic steels

Austenitic steels are a group of iron alloys whose dominant microstructure is austenite – a face-centred phase stabilised mainly by nickel and partially by nitrogen. They are characterised by high ductility, relatively high strength after strain hardening, good corrosion resistance and good weldability. In practice the term “stainless steel” refers to alloys with chromium content usually above ~10.5%, which form a passive chromium oxide layer on the surface that protects against further corrosion. When an austenitic steel additionally shows resistance to acids and chemical agents across a wide range of environments, it is referred to as “acid-resistant steel”.

Typical properties of austenitic steels:

  • non-magnetic in the annealed condition (may become weakly ferromagnetic after plastic deformation),
  • high toughness and elongation,
  • excellent weldability and cold formability,
  • good resistance to general corrosion and a range of chemicals, with limitations in chloride-containing environments.

Differences between acid-resistant and stainless steels

In practice the terms “stainless” and “acid-resistant” often overlap, but there is a subtle difference: every acid-resistant steel is stainless, but not every stainless steel retains chemical resistance under strongly acidic or aggressive conditions. “Acid-resistant” emphasises suitability for environments where acids (e.g. nitric, dilute sulphuric) or aggressive chemical solutions are present. The choice between them is based on analysis of the working environment: if hydrochlorides, chloride ions or high temperatures are present, the appropriate grade must be selected and possibly alloying additions (e.g. molybdenum) or protective processes applied.

Importance of anti-corrosion properties in industry

Corrosion resistance is a key factor determining the service life and safety of equipment, installations and structural elements. In the food and pharmaceutical industries surface resistance guarantees cleanliness and absence of contamination; in the chemical industry it helps avoid costly failures and leaks; in construction and architecture it affects aesthetics and maintenance costs. Austenitic steels, thanks to their durable passive layer, minimise general, microbiological and pitting corrosion, which translates into lower operating costs and greater process safety.

History and development of grade 1.4301 (AISI 304)

Beginnings and evolution of austenitic steels

The history of stainless steel begins around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, when it was discovered that adding chromium to steel creates an oxide layer that protects the surface. The first practical grades appeared in the 1910s–1920s. In subsequent decades, developments in metallurgy and the need for materials with better chemical resistance led to the introduction of austenitic alloys with nickel, which stabilised austenite and improved ductility and weldability.

The grade known today as 1.4301 (AISI 304) took shape in the first half of the 20th century as a universal stainless steel for wide use. Thanks to the balance between chromium content (~18%) and nickel (~8–10%), 1.4301 offers an excellent combination of corrosion resistance, formability and suitability for industrial production.

Importance of German, Russian and American standards (X5CrNi18-10, 0H18N9, AISI 304)

Different designation systems reflect the history and harmonisation of the metallurgical industry:

  • X5CrNi18-10 is the designation according to the European/German standard (EN/DIN), where “X” denotes an alloy, the numbers indicate approximate element contents (Cr ~18%, Ni ~10%), and “5” refers to the maximum carbon content of 0.05% (in practice 1.4301 allows up to 0.07% C).
  • 0H18N9 is the Russian equivalent (GOST), where the letter “H” corresponds to nickel (Ni), and the numbers 18 and 9 approximate Cr and Ni contents.
  • AISI 304 is the American classification, widely used worldwide and easily recognised by engineers and buyers.

All these designations refer to essentially the same composition and properties, although tolerances and production specifications may differ in detail depending on the standard.

Contemporary applications and popularity of 1.4301

1.4301 is the most universal and most commonly used stainless steel grade. Its ubiquity results from a good compromise between cost and technical properties. Typical applications:

  • kitchenware, utensils, sinks,
  • components of food and brewery installations,
  • pharmaceutical apparatus,
  • architectural details and cladding,
  • pipes and fittings operating in moderately aggressive environments.

Developments in steel production, availability of the alloy and standardised norms mean that 1.4301 remains the first choice where good corrosion resistance is required within an economical budget.

Chemical composition of 1.4301 X5CrNi18-10 0H18N9 AISI 304

Main elements: chromium, nickel, carbon

The chemical composition defines the properties of 1.4301. Typical element limits are as follows (indicative values in accordance with EN/DIN standards):

  • Chromium (Cr): 17.0–19.0% – key for forming the passive layer and corrosion resistance.
  • Nickel (Ni): 8.0–10.5% – stabilises austenite, improves ductility and corrosion resistance in reducing environments.
  • Carbon (C): ≤0.07% – low level limits precipitation of chromium carbides during heat treatment, reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion (sensitisation).

These three elements define the basic character of the alloy: chromium provides passivation, nickel stabilises the austenitic structure, and low carbon minimises welding and heat-treatment related corrosion issues.

Effect of additional elements on steel properties

Besides the main constituents, other elements are present in trace amounts or as controlled additions:

  • Manganese (Mn): up to ~2% – improves oxidation control during production and partly replaces some nickel.
  • Silicon (Si): up to ~1% – improves oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
  • Nitrogen (N): trace amounts – can improve strength and corrosion resistance in certain conditions.
  • Phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S): very low contents (P ≤0.045%, S ≤0.015%) – controlled because they worsen ductility and corrosion resistance; sulphur increases machinability but is undesirable in acid-resistant applications.

Molybdenum additions (in related grades, e.g. 1.4401) increase resistance to pitting in chloride environments, so 1.4301 without molybdenum has limitations in chloride-containing environments.

Analysis of tolerances and standards for component contents

Standards specify not only nominal values but also production tolerances. The manufacturer must ensure that the chemical composition falls within specified limits, which affects batch certification and conformity with standards (e.g. EN 10204). When ordering it is important to specify quality control requirements, spectrometric analysis and material certificates. Even small deviations in C, Ni or Cr content can significantly affect steel behaviour in critical service conditions.

Mechanical and physical properties of 1.4301

Tensile strength and hardness

Typical mechanical properties of 1.4301 in the delivery condition (annealed) have approximate values:

  • Tensile strength (Rm): about 520–720 MPa,
  • Yield strength (Rp0.2): about 210–310 MPa,
  • Elongation at break (A5): typically ≥40%,
  • Hardness (HB): about 150–200 HB depending on processing.

These values make 1.4301 a material with a good strength-to-ductility ratio, which makes it easy to form and safe in applications where deformation without cracking is required.

Ductility and resistance to deformation

Thanks to the stable austenitic structure, 1.4301 is characterised by high ductility and the ability to undergo significant plastic deformation without cracking. This allows wide use of bending, deep drawing and cold forming techniques. With concurrent plastic working, strain hardening occurs, increasing strength but possibly causing partial loss of non-magnetic behaviour and a reduction in corrosion resistance in hard-to-access crevices.

Corrosion resistance and action of chemical agents

1.4301 shows good resistance to general corrosion in atmospheres and many chemicals, for example in most non-oxidising acids and aqueous environments without a high chloride content. Limitations:

  • susceptibility to pitting and crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides (e.g. in marine environments, where de-icing salts are used),
  • possibility of intergranular corrosion after exposure in the range 450–850°C, when chromium carbides precipitate (sensitisation) – this risk is reduced by the low-carbon 304L variant or titanium stabilisation (321).

In practice resistance depends on surface cleanliness, finish (polishing, passivation) and the presence of stresses and crevices that encourage accumulation of aggressive ions.

Production process and machining of 1.4301

Methods of producing austenitic stainless steel

Production begins in electric furnaces or converters, where raw iron is melted with alloying additions. Key stages:

  • melting in an electric arc furnace (EAF) and refining (e.g. argon-oxygen decarburisation, AOD) to control carbon content and impurities,
  • continuous casting or ingot formation,
  • hot rolling, annealing and recrystallisation,
  • in some applications additional processes such as cold rolling and final annealing to improve structure and surface properties.

Control of the atmosphere and impurity-reduction processes is crucial to obtain uniform properties and meet quality standards.

Features and techniques of plastic working

1.4301 is well suited to both cold and hot working. Applications include:

  • stamping and bending – high ductility enables thin walls and complex shapes,
  • rolling and stretching – allow production of materials with various thicknesses and finishes,
  • machining – the steel is relatively “slippery”, requiring appropriate tools and cutting parameters; sulphur additions in other grades would improve machinability, but in 1.4301 S is minimised because of corrosion resistance.

After machining it is important to degrease, passivate and possibly polish the surface to restore and strengthen the passive layer.

Welding and technological challenges for 1.4301

Weldability of 1.4301 is very good – the alloy is easy to weld by MIG/MAG, TIG and arc welding. Nevertheless there are specific challenges:

  • risk of sensitisation (precipitation of chromium carbides) in the heat-affected zone – in applications sensitive to intergranular corrosion it is recommended to use low-carbon steels (304L, 1.4306) or filler materials that minimise this phenomenon,
  • the need to use appropriate welding wires and electrodes (e.g. 308L for 304 joints) and to control welding parameters to avoid excessive hardening and cold cracking,
  • after welding it is advisable to remove slag, degrease and passivate to rebuild the protective layer; in some cases stress-relief annealing is also used.

Good technological practice and correct selection of filler material minimise risks and allow safe fabrication of welded structures.

Practical applications of 1.4301 across industries

Food and pharmaceutical industry

1.4301 is widely used where hygiene is a priority:

  • vats, pipelines and fittings in food and brewery plants,
  • equipment for milk and cheese processing,
  • worktables, countertops, sinks,
  • production line components in the pharmaceutical industry where ease of cleaning and lack of reaction with products are important.

Thanks to the ability to passivate surfaces and ease of cleaning, this steel minimises the risk of contamination and microbial growth.

Construction and architecture

In architecture 1.4301 is used for:

  • facades, handrails, interior finishes,
  • small urban architecture elements, e.g. street furniture,
  • roof structures and rainwater drainage – where atmospheric corrosion is not extreme.

Aesthetics, durability and low maintenance make it a popular choice for public buildings and commercial facilities.

Automotive and machine production

In automotive and machinery industries 1.4301 is used for:

  • parts of exhaust systems (in not overly aggressive chemical conditions),
  • heat exchangers, guards and machine components,
  • components used in food and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Where a good combination of ductility, weldability and corrosion resistance is required, 1.4301 serves as an economical alternative.

Chemical and petrochemical industry

In chemical applications 1.4301 is used in apparatus and installations handling less aggressive media, and also as a backup material and for components not in constant contact with strongly chloride-containing solutions. In more aggressive environments grades containing molybdenum (e.g. 1.4401/316) or specialised alloys are preferred.

Advantages and limitations of using 1.4301 X5CrNi18-10 0H18N9

Benefits arising from high corrosion resistance

  • long service life in moderately corrosive environments,
  • low maintenance and upkeep costs compared with non-resistant materials,
  • aesthetically pleasing, durable surface resistant to stains and soiling,
  • excellent weldability and formability enabling efficient production of complex-shaped components.

Economic aspects and material availability

1.4301 is one of the cheapest and most readily available stainless steel grades. Due to mass production and simple ingredients (no molybdenum), the purchase cost is usually lower than that of high-alloy steels. Availability in sheets, pipes, bars or wire facilitates design and replacement of parts.

Potential drawbacks and limitations in specialised applications

  • limited resistance to corrosion in chloride-rich environments – unsuitable for constant contact with seawater or salts,
  • risk of sensitisation during prolonged exposure in the 450–850°C range, leading to intergranular corrosion,
  • in very high-temperature conditions or aggressive chemicals specialised alloys or protective coatings are required.

Therefore, when designing installations and equipment it is crucial to understand the limits of 1.4301 and choose alternatives where requirements exceed the capabilities of this grade.

Comparison of 1.4301 with other stainless steel grades

Differences in composition and technical properties

  • 1.4301 vs 1.4401 (AISI 316 / X5CrNiMo17-12-2) – 1.4401 contains molybdenum (about 2–3%), which significantly increases resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. 1.4401 is more expensive but indispensable in marine conditions or in the chemical industry where chlorides are present.
  • 1.4301 vs 1.4541 (AISI 321 / X6CrNiTi18-10) – 1.4541 is titanium-stabilised, which prevents precipitation of chromium carbides during heat treatment and sensitisation. It is used where prolonged heating occurs in temperature ranges that promote carbide precipitation.
  • 1.4301 vs 316L– 316L (equivalent to 1.4404) is a low-carbon molybdenum-containing steel. 316L combines chloride resistance with minimal risk of sensitisation, which makes it the preferred choice in applications requiring both pitting resistance and post-weld stability.

Selected alternatives: 1.4401, 1.4541, 316L

  • 1.4401 (316): the best choice for chloride-containing environments; more expensive but more durable in aggressive conditions.
  • 1.4541 (321): recommended for thermal applications involving prolonged heating in ranges that favour sensitisation.
  • 316L: combines the benefits of molybdenum with low carbon content, eliminating sensitisation after welding; used in marine, pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Guidance on selecting a steel grade for applications

  • for atmospheric conditions and most food-industry applications: 1.4301 is sufficient,
  • for marine, chloride or highly aggressive environments: choose 1.4401/316/316L,
  • for applications with prolonged heating: consider 1.4541 or stabilised grades,
  • for welded structures where post-weld resistance is critical: prefer low-carbon variants (304L/316L) or apply appropriate welding and heat-treatment procedures.

The decision should be based on analysis of the working environment, life-cycle costs and safety requirements.

Standards and certifications for 1.4301 in Poland and worldwide

European standards (EN)

The most important standards regulating technical requirements for stainless steels in Europe are:

  • EN 10088 – a series of standards concerning stainless steels; contains specifications for chemical composition, mechanical properties and requirements for metallurgical products,
  • EN 10204 – types of inspection certificates (e.g. 3.1, 3.2) required for deliveries to the food, pharmaceutical and energy industries.

In practice manufacturers and buyers agree the scope of documents and tests together with the order specification.

German (DIN), Russian (GOST) and American (AISI, ASTM) standards

  • DIN/EN: designation X5CrNi18-10 / 1.4301 – corresponds to European quality and dimensional standards,
  • GOST: 0H18N9 – Russian classification, useful for international projects with partners from the former USSR area,
  • AISI/ASTM: AISI 304 and ASTM standards (e.g. A240 for plates and sheets, A276 for bars) – often required for export orders to the USA and countries following American standards.

Importance of quality and conformity certificates

Certificates and quality documents demonstrate material conformity with required standards, which is crucial for regulated industries (pharmaceutical, energy, aerospace). Typical documents are:

  • EN 10204 3.1 certificate (confirmation by the manufacturer and an independent laboratory),
  • material test certificates and mechanical test results,
  • welding documentation and technological certificates concerning processing and welding.

Lack of appropriate certificates may result in material rejection, claims or serious operational consequences.

Future and innovations in austenitic acid-resistant steels

New production technologies and alloy modifications

The steel industry continuously optimises processes to produce materials with better properties at lower cost. Research directions:

  • composition modifications with added nitrogen (to increase strength and corrosion resistance without requiring large amounts of nickel),
  • “lean” stainless alloys – lowering nickel content while maintaining required resistance by better control of other elements and surface treatments,
  • controlled microstructures and heat treatments that minimise defects and improve resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

New production processes, such as improved AOD control and continuous casting techniques, reduce impurities and improve material homogeneity.

Environmental aspects and stainless steel recycling

Stainless steel is one of the most recyclable construction materials. Recycling reduces CO2 emissions and consumption of natural resources. Furthermore:

  • recycling stainless steel can lower the production cost of new material,
  • increasing emphasis is placed on reducing energy use in production and improving the trace element profile (less nickel, molybdenum consumption),
  • development of metal recovery technologies from waste increases resource efficiency.

Ecology and economy go hand in hand: long-life materials with a high percentage of recycled steel are becoming standard.

Development of applications in modern industries

New sectors – such as renewable technologies, advanced medicine and modern electric mobility – are creating demand for alloys with specific properties: better thermal conductivity, greater resistance to electrochemical corrosion or improved biocompatibility. Innovations in coatings, thin-film layers and novel surface processes (e.g. nanostructuring) expand the range of austenitic steel applications.
