Stainless steel hollow bars – what are they used for?

A hollow bar is a thick-walled seamless tube – in effect, a bar with a ready-made bore. It replaces solid bar wherever the finished part has to be hollow anyway, saving drilling and boring time, material and tooling.

Typical applications

  • bearing, guide and spacer bushes,
  • rings, flanges and sealing components,
  • valve bodies, fittings and hydraulic parts,
  • hollow shafts and machine parts for the food, chemical and marine industries.

Standards and choosing a size

Hollow bars for machining are covered by EN 10294-2, and seamless stainless steel tubes by EN 10216-5. When choosing a size, allow for machining stock: the outside diameter of the hollow bar should be slightly larger, and the inside diameter slightly smaller, than those of the finished part.

Why hollow bar instead of solid bar?

When machining solid bar, most of the material ends up as swarf. A hollow bar with the right inside diameter shortens machining time, reduces tool wear and lowers the cost per part – especially for large diameters and more expensive acid-resistant grades.

Acid-resistant

Austenitic with molybdenum – resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion; for chemicals, processing and chloride environments.

Austenitic stainless

Chromium-nickel without molybdenum – the standard choice for structures, food service and interiors.
