Steel flanges are used, among other things, to join sections of pipeline – an essential component in pressure structures of every kind. They make it possible to achieve tight joints between pipes, so that an installation can withstand pressures of up to 350 atmospheres. The joint can of course be reinforced further with additional threaded rings. What types of steel flange are available on the Polish market?
What are steel flanges?
A steel flange is simply a fitting that joins successive sections of pipeline tightly together. Flanges are usually made to PN, DIN or ANSI standards, although a custom design can often be ordered as well. They come in many variants, so whatever the structure, there is a product to suit the installation. The most frequently chosen are slip-on, blind and weld neck flanges.
Slip-on flanges
Steel slip-on flanges are used in pipelines carrying mainly water or steam. Plumbers and installers use them often to join pipes. To reduce surface imperfections, remember that the seal in a flange of this kind should be flexible and properly closed. Slip-on steel flanges come with two types of grooving: open spiral and concentric. Tightness between two flanges is guaranteed by high-quality gaskets, which under the standards should be compressed by the bolts. They should also fill the entire groove so that no leakage occurs at the thread.
Blind flanges
As the name suggests, blind flanges are used at the ends of pipelines. Unlike slip-on or weld neck flanges, this is not a joining component but a closing one. Like other flanges, it also strengthens the structure. With blind flanges made of stainless steel there is no need to worry about leaks in the installation – provided, of course, that the pipeline has been built correctly and all safety procedures have been observed.
Weld neck flanges
Weld neck flanges are used as components of process installations. They introduce an additional neck where the pipeline meets the flange and are used in welded and forged flange joints. Because they improve the safety of an installation, on equipment exposed to heavy loads they are a basic item of equipment required by procedure. Weld neck flanges have to be matched precisely in size to the installation, so it is not a purchase to rush. The best course is to discuss the choice with a steel products specialist.
Polish steelmaking is doing everything it can to meet the growing expectations of European and global industry, which is why steel flanges are produced in a range of sizes and variants. That flexibility means that whatever installation is planned, leading producers can meet their customers’ needs with products that are durable and safe. If there is any doubt about the size or type of flange, do not hesitate to contact the supplier.
